As little ones learn to walk on wheels, falls are inevitable and so safety is of utmost importance. A protective gear to help combat the fear of falling is quite needed.

Once your child garners the courage to adapt and stand on the roller skates with confidence, you can begin the training.

- Skate with them: If your child is lacking confidence on roller skates, hold him by the hand and pull him along. Making him keep his feet parallel to each other is an important trick.
- Learning the Exercise: Begin with simple and easy exercises and only when then master them, increase the difficulty level.
If your child is afraid of roller skating, hold him by your hand and pull him towards you when he's in the right posture. Explain your child that he can move forward by pushing off with the right foot and then the left foot alternatively according to the posture.
To avoid your child from abandoning the activity due to lack of confidence or falling down, you need to teach him simple exercises and then gradually increase the difficulty level.
- "Flashlights": Draw circles with colored chalks on the asphalt. Tell the child that he needs to go around them.
To start with explain how to move with the heels together and toes apart. Then he evenly spreads the feet apart around the first circle and then brings them together again.
Explain to the child that he shouldn't bring the feet together tightly as he has to move towards the next circle and so on.
- " A snake": The child positions the feet parallel to each other while pushing off with the heels, going from side to side and the feet are together. Once the child learns to perform the forward movement you can teach the same backward.
- "Figure Eight": This exercise is similar to the first one, with the only difference that the child has to cross the legs.
How to Stop while Roller Skating?
There are multiple ways to stop when on the roller skates. The simplest of them and especially at the beginner level is to stop against an obstacle. The obstacle could be a tree, lamppost, you or even another friend. Keep a watch on your child so that they don't fall or get hurt.
Another simple way would be to jump out onto the lawn and run a few steps ahead.
But, don't let your child get used to all this and teach him to apply the brakes at the backside of the roller boot when he is ready. To do this, the child has to extend one leg and raise the toes thus pressing on the brake with the heel. At the same time, he bends the other knee by sitting a bit.
How to fall down while Roller Skating?
When roller skating, it's important to know how to fall down. It's of great importance that your child always tries to fall down forward. The fall should be as "slippery" as possible.
Here's how the sequence of contact happens after the fall.
- Knee pads
- Elbow pads
- Wrist pads
At a low speed the child always falls on the knee pads. If the child starts to fall backwards, he should quickly bend his knees and lean forward. This will ensure that he either balances himself or falls on the knee pads.
Not the best but an acceptable fall is falling on the elbow pads. But the worst is to fall backwards on the extended arm.
